Hana Kitasei believes that cinematography is in essence: good visual storytelling. She always starts by discussing with the filmmakers what point-of-view needs to be conveyed and what subtext you want to bring out. Most importantly, she wants to know how you desire your audience to feel about what they see. She will help you discover how to accomplish this these elements through carefully chosen camera placement and expressive lighting.
As a Japanese and American cinematographer who grew up in New York, DC, and Tokyo, Hana graduated with a BA in mathematics from Harvard and an MFA in cinematography from the American Film Institute. Hana has assisted Ellen Kuras, ASC, (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) while cutting her teeth on a wide range of narrative, documentary, and experimental projects.
Hana Kitasei is an LA-based cinematographer with a strong technical background and an even stronger desire to tell a good story.
