Kate Phelan started working on movies in the early ’90s, earning credits on KIDS, NADJA, I SHOT ANDY WARHOL, HAPPINESS. In 1999, she gaffed the Sundance winner GIRLFIGHT directed by Karyn Kusama and sleeper hit PIECES OF APRIL. Other directors she gaffed for include Jim McKay (EVERYDAY PEOPLE) and indie film legend John Sayles (SUNSHINE STATE).
In 2004 Kate moved from the lighting department to director of photography. She lensed the first season of TOSH.O and the Emmy nominated web series, HONESTY, both for Comedy Central. She’s shot promos for CBS, VH1, TBS, Nickelodeon and E! as well as pilots for MTV & VH1. Feature film FALL TO RISE screened at Lincoln Center’s Dance on Film series in 2015. Kate is also a recurring part time camera operator on ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK (Season 4). Kate continues to shoot promos and commercials.
In 2012 Kate began to shift her focus to directing. Since then she completed a two year writing fellowship at Writers Bootcamp and studied acting with Sidse Plough at The Barrow Group. In 2014 she trailed director/showrunner/big brother Tony Phelan on GREYS ANATOMY (Season 10 episode 24). In 2015 she wrote and directed the short VISIT 57 screening on the festival circuit this year. Kate was short-listed for AFI’s Directing Workshop for Women in 2016. She directs promos, shorts and branded content.
