Michelle Kwong is a 22-year-old cinematographer and photographer from Long Island, New York. Her passion for visual imagery stemmed from her desire to convey, capture, and instill emotions that she previously couldn’t do with words alone.
Michelle’s love for visual imagery began with her exploration of photography. Michelle shoots anything and everything ranging from portraiture and landscapes to concerts and events. Michelle has shot artists such as Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Alesso, Phillip Phillips, and Jason Mraz, and personalities such as Will Ferrell, Marlon Wayans, and Larry David. These photos have appeared on various websites including Emerson College’s news section, Boston.com, Indieminded.com, Romansrapup.com and others.
After graduating from Emerson College with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in cinematography and a minor in photography, Michelle has not only worked on professional film sets with actors such as Katie Holmes, Lena Dunham, and Alysia Reiner, but has also created several short films that have garnered accolades.
Her collaborative documentary discussing media perpetuation of racism against Asian-Americans, I’m Not Even That, was an official selection at the 2010 New York Asian American International Film Festival and 11th Annual DC Asian Pacific American Film Festival. Her short film, Revelation, was among several short films created by young filmmakers that were recognized by the contest board of the Interpretations Film contest in 2010. Weirdo Records, a collaborative documentary about a local record store in Cambridge, Massachusetts, was nominated for Outstanding Documentary in the 2014 33rd Annual EVVY Awards and was an official selection at the 2013 Ballston Spa Film Festival and 2014 Salem Mass Reality Check Film Festival. Her own collaborative BFA thesis film between her and Paul Lazo, Inside Boxes, is an official selection at the 2015 Josiah Media Festival and is currently being submitted to other festivals.
Michelle has worked on several music videos, commercials, short films, and features and has been chosen as the director of photography for several short films. Michelle is currently a freelance director of photography and photographer based in Los Angeles.
